How to Restore Default Security Settings for a Custom Program Files Folder?

I created a custom Program Files folder on my new drive, trying to mirror the permissions and security settings of the default Program Files on my C drive. Now every time I try to access anything on this new drive, I'm prompted for permission, which is a hassle. I'm currently working on a project in 3ds Max, and it won't even save in this new folder. I've attempted to reset the settings using the command prompt, but nothing has changed. How can I revert the security settings back to default?

You might want to delete that custom Program Files folder you created. The default folder on the C drive has important hidden files that help programs function properly. Also, try running the 'sfc /scannow' command; it can help restore any corrupted files on your C drive.

I messed up the security settings on my whole new drive, so now every folder is asking for permission, not just the Program Files.

I'm curious why you felt the need to create your own Program Files folder? Did you by chance delete the existing one?

I had to, my C drive was almost full! I thought it made sense to have both drives with the same settings for installing programs.

Which version of Windows are you using? If you're on Professional or above, there’s a 'Security' tab in Explorer that can help you fix these issues. If you're on Home Edition, you'll likely need to run a command line to sort it out. Just be careful, tweaking the ACLs on the wrong folder can lead to bigger problems!
