How to Successfully Transition into DevOps Roles?

I've been working as a production support engineer for the last four years and have gained experience in handling production incidents alongside tools like Splunk and NewRelic. Over the past year and a half, I've dedicated myself to learning DevOps and I'm now eager to transition into either DevOps or SRE roles. I feel prepared for interviews, estimating a success rate of about 4 out of 10. Given my learning and experience, am I likely to succeed in a DevOps position once I land a job?

Honestly, in today's environment, you can adapt to almost any role with the right mindset. It's all about thinking holistically—understanding the how, why, and how to prevent issues. So if you focus on these aspects, you should be fine.

A great step you can take is to get involved with the development teams informally. Build connections, dig into their codebases, and understand their workflow. It’s important to grasp their challenges and motivations. While studying the tech side is key, having that close relationship with developers can make a big difference in your interviews.

It really depends on your experience. As a DevOps engineer who came from cloud and systems roles, I can tell you that mastering Linux and networking is crucial. The rest are just tools we use to achieve our goals—focus on those foundational skills!
