I'm looking to upgrade my gaming PC that I built about three years ago, as it's been performing well for 1080p gaming, but now I'm ready to tackle 1440p. My current rig has started to struggle with newer titles due to VRAM limitations and some stuttering issues. I have a budget of $800 for upgrades. Here are my current specs:
- CPU: Intel Core i5-12400F (6 Cores / 12 Threads)
- GPU: ZOTAC RTX 4060 Twin Edge OC (8GB)
- Motherboard: Asrock B760M PG Lightning (DDR5)
- RAM: 16GB (2 x 8GB) Patriot SL Sig DDR5 5600MHz
- Storage: 1TB Lexar NM790 Gen4 SSD
- PSU: 650W FSP Hv Pro 80+ Bronze
I'm wondering if I should invest the majority of my budget into a new GPU (like an RTX 5070 or 4070 Ti Super), if my 650W PSU will handle a significant GPU upgrade, if I should upgrade to 32GB of RAM now, and whether my i5-12400F will bottleneck a high-end card at 1440p.

Your 650W PSU is decent, but if you plan on getting something like a 4070 Ti, I'd consider upgrading it to 750W to be safe. Your CPU should manage well, but keep an eye on performance across different titles. If you're hitting 120fps on lower settings, that's a good sign you're not too far off!
Upgrading to 32GB of RAM could help with VRAM issues, especially in newer games, so I’d do that first. You can always upgrade your GPU later. Just make sure your PSU can support the extra load, but 650W might be a bit tight depending on the GPU you choose.
Is it really necessary to go to 32GB now? I thought 16GB was still fine.
I'd recommend focusing on a new GPU first. A solid option would be the RTX 5070. Your current i5-12400F should still perform pretty well with it, and you don't need to worry too much about a bottleneck unless you're pushing crazy settings.
How much better is the 5070 compared to what you have now?

What if I want to overclock my CPU later? Should I upgrade the PSU besides the GPU?
