How to Use Microsoft Office Without a Subscription?

Hey there! I've been happily using Microsoft Office apps on my Mac without issues until recently. Now, whenever I try to open Word or Excel files that I could edit before, I'm getting a pop-up saying the files are read-only and I need to activate a subscription to edit them. Is there a way to keep using the desktop apps without paying that monthly fee? Also, why is this pop-up happening now? It seems like others have faced this before, so I'm curious if this is a new change or not.

If you're looking for alternatives, LibreOffice is a solid option. It's completely free and can handle most Office files without any hassle.

You can also access Office online for free! Just search for "Microsoft 365 free online" and you'll find the web versions available at no cost.

The pop-up indicates your version of Office needs activation. You can either buy the one-time version of Office 2024 for about $180, which will last for the life of your computer, or try Apple's free apps like Pages and Numbers if you don't need Office specifically.

You might want to check out WPS Office; they offer a free version that works pretty well for basic home use. It could be a good alternative!

On Mac, you could consider using Apache OpenOffice as a free and open-source alternative if you need something similar to Office.
