Hey everyone! I'm a Systems Administrator from New Zealand with around 15 years of experience mainly in Wintel technologies like Windows Server and VMware. Unfortunately, the job market here is pretty bad, and I've been out of work for 6 months now. I'm curious about the Australian IT job market, particularly for Senior Systems Administrators. Is it any better than New Zealand's? What can I expect?

If you're keen on relocating, check out job listings on Seek. You’ll find quite a few Systems Administration roles available. Just be prepared to filter through locations, as some are not IT-specific. A lot of New Zealanders have moved to places like Western Australia for better opportunities.
You don't necessarily need to move before you start job hunting. Finding a position first could potentially lead to a relocation package, but it's tough to secure work remotely, so be prepared for a challenging process.
Looking into communication and VoIP skills can be a smart move too. There’s a high demand for those skills in Australia right now, especially with advancements in cloud technology. If you dig into SIP and cloud PBX systems, you could find some great opportunities.
It might be an improvement over New Zealand, but getting a tech job in Australia can be really stressful right now. The interview process is pretty intense with multiple rounds, practical tests, and lots of other applicants. I got my job through networking rather than traditional interviews, but I can’t imagine many people managing that today.
Honestly, it's tough out there. You're up against a lot of competition, including outsourcing from countries like India and the Philippines, as well as local companies not wanting to pay good wages. Plus, the demand seems to be shifting towards DevOps skills and other engineering-type roles.
