I accidentally fell for an Ultraviewer scam—what should I do now?

Today, I got caught up in a serious situation after trying to access my health patient portal. Suddenly, my screen was bombarded with pop-ups and loud alarm sounds claiming my computer was locked. In a panic, I called the number that displayed (1888-781-8284) and ended up speaking with a couple of people with Indian accents. I was so flustered that I downloaded Ultraviewer as they instructed. They accessed my computer and scared me with stories about 'bad people' online. They also asked for personal information regarding my non-existent bank account and tried to get me to access my Google accounts, which thankfully was blocked. After realizing my mistake, I contacted Microsoft and they helped remove the Ultraviewer program. But I'm worried about how badly I'm affected by this situation. Is there something more I should do to fix this? I even recorded the entire conversation and am reaching out for advice in a few different places.

Uninstall Ultraviewer, and if you didn’t log into any accounts or give them payment info, you should be in the clear. Microsoft's involvement isn’t necessary after removal. Just focus on moving forward and don’t dwell on it too much—scams can happen to anyone.

For extra caution, I'd recommend creating a Linux USB recovery stick on another computer. Boot from it to back up your important files, then format your drive and do a clean install of Windows. This way, you ensure there's no lingering malware. It might sound complicated, so let me know if you need a step-by-step guide!

First off, don't ever call numbers from pop-ups, they're always scams trying to extort money. As for your situation, if you uninstalled Ultraviewer and didn't provide any real passwords while they were accessing, you should be fine. Just make sure to change any passwords you might have entered while they were connected. It's definitely a scary experience, but if you've taken these steps, you should be okay!
