I've been gaming at 1080p for a long time and plan to stick with it since it suits me just fine. I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card and I'm considering two options: the RTX 5070 and the RX 9070 (non-XT). The RX 9070 is quite a bit pricier where I live. My main question is whether the 12GB VRAM on the RTX 5070 is a good investment for the future, or if I should stretch my budget for the RX 9070 instead?

Really, nothing's truly future proof. High-end hardware might last longer, but you can expect to deal with increasing demands. At 1080p, though? You shouldn't run into problems for a while with 12GB unless you're pushing really demanding settings.
Check out some comparison videos to really see how they perform. But honestly, 12GB is becoming the lower end for current requirements, especially for new games. 16GB is starting to be the norm. If you're gaming mostly at 1080p, you might be safe for a while, but it really isn’t future proof.
In my opinion, you'd be fine for about 2-3 years with 12GB if you're playing on medium to high settings. But keep in mind that gaming requirements keep increasing, so nothing is guaranteed to last forever.
I have the RTX 5070, and it's handled everything I've thrown at it at 1440p and 4K just fine. Remember, nothing is truly 'future proof'—you might have to lower settings in a few years or decide to upgrade. The 70 series isn't designed to max out every game anyway. Personally, I've had issues with AMD in the past, which makes me hesitant to recommend the RX 9070, especially if it's overpriced where you are. Just my experience!
Thanks for the detailed response! I totally get that future proofing isn't real, I'm just hoping to have something that plays well now without regrets later. The 12GB sounds decent, but I'm wondering if that extra 4GB from the 16GB models is worth it.

Yeah, for 1080p, 12GB should last a good bit. But as you go to 1440p, I'd be more cautious. It's kind of a tricky balance!
