Is $400 a fair compensation from Apple for a screen they broke on my iMac?

I took my 2017 27" iMac Pro to Apple for repairs, and they found it needs a new logic board. I could get one for about $150 on eBay, but their pricing for a new one is pretty steep. While they were repairing it, they accidentally cracked the screen. They're trying to find a replacement, but in the meantime, they offered me $400 towards a new device if I decided to give up on the repair.

Is this really the best they can do? I feel like $400 is low considering they broke my screen. Two employees mentioned this was their top offer, but I wonder if I might be entitled to more since the damage wasn't my fault. Anyone have insight into this situation with Apple?

It's tough because even though your iMac is vintage, they shouldn’t have handled it poorly in the first place. I get it that they want to protect their interests, but seriously, if I gave them a vintage car and they broke it, they would definitely be responsible for fixing it right.

It’s surprising they opened it up if they weren’t confident in fixing it! I think they should have thought twice about that repair. Maybe you could negotiate a little more or see if there’s a way to get an upgrade?

Honestly, $400 feels pretty low, especially since they cracked the screen. It's true that your iMac is getting up there in age, but that doesn't change the fact that their mistake caused damage. They might be trying to avoid taking on a vintage device that they can't easily repair, but they should still be more accountable for their error. I'd definitely push for a better deal, if possible.

Did you go through an official Apple Store, or was it a third-party dealer? Sometimes the policies differ, and it could impact your compensation.

I'd suggest checking if they can offer you a different model instead. Since they might consider your iMac vintage, they're likely looking to get you into a new system altogether. But you're right to feel frustrated; upgrading from a 27" screen to a smaller 24" really isn't a fair trade-off. Make sure to voice your concerns!

Definitely! They can't downgrade your screen size without proper compensation. Keep pushing for something that suits your needs.
