Is $50/hr a fair rate for a Tier 2 Technician role?

I'm starting a job as a Tier 2 technician for a Gas Station company on the East Coast, focusing on troubleshooting and resolving technical issues at various retail locations. Previously, I worked in a similar role for a year, earning $22/hr. The new job offers a starting pay of $40/hr, but they mentioned a range of $40-$60/hr depending on experience. Given my 1.5 years in this type of IT role and 7-8 years in Deskside Support, I'm wondering if asking for $50/hr is reasonable. I'd appreciate any insights or advice from those familiar with this kind of work.

Make sure to check if this job requires a lot of driving to different locations and who will cover travel expenses. $50/hr sounds nice, but if you're stuck in traffic or using your own car, that can be a real downer. Also, be mindful if you’re classified as self-employed because that could affect your earnings with taxes.

$40-$60 sounds like a great pay range to me! If you're feeling confident about your skills, I'd definitely recommend aiming for the middle ground. It never hurts to ask for a bit more, especially if you have solid experience under your belt.

From my experience supporting convenience stores, patience is key! Your end users might not be very tech-savvy, plus the equipment can be quite basic, leading to frequent troubleshooting. Be prepared for odd hours, too—if the stores are open 24/7, you might get calls at all hours. I actually enjoyed it; just make sure you connect with the fuel techs for some teamwork!

If it's a W2 job, you're in a good spot. But if it's a 1099 gig, I'd recommend negotiating for at least $70/hr. Consider adding in minimum billable hours for travel and meals as well.
