Hey everyone, I've got a 2018 MacBook Pro with a keyboard issue called 'sticky keys'—you know, where random keys double or triple type, especially on the left side. Backspace sometimes deletes more than one key too, which is super annoying! I heard there was a recall for this problem back in 2019. Now, I got quoted $700 for the repair, which feels way overpriced. On the flip side, I love this laptop; it has an i7 and a 1TB SSD that I paid extra for when I bought it for school. I also reached out to a third-party repair shop and they quoted me between $400-$450, which seems a lot more reasonable. But I'm a bit nervous about going the third-party route. Has anyone else dealt with this MacBook keyboard issue? Is it a straightforward fix for a third-party shop? Would love to hear your experiences! Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend a third-party repair for this issue. Given that Intel Macs are nearing the end of their support lifespan, it might be a smarter option to invest in a newer model. I’ve seen some really good deals on basic MacBook Airs lately that are in the same price range as your repair quote.
Top case repairs can be super costly, and since the service program is expired, you're kind of stuck. If I were you, I'd wait until your battery health is below 80%. Then you can get a Top Case replacement at the battery rate, which is significantly cheaper—just keep in mind you have to go through Apple's diagnostic process first.
Honestly, I think buying a new M1 MacBook Air for around $999 would be a better investment. The new M-series Macs perform way better and will get more updates in the future.
I get that, but I really don't want to just ditch a laptop I spent $2,000 on. It's got solid specs with 1TB SSD and 32GB RAM. I'd like to keep using it for a few more years!
