Is 96GB of RAM Way Too Much for Everyday Use?

I recently received a generous gift of 96GB of RAM, and after swapping it out from my previous 32GB, I've only noticed a minor improvement — a stuttering issue in one of my older games has disappeared. Beyond that, I'm kinda lost on what to do with this much RAM since my usage seems pretty low. I've tried utilizing some of it by changing my wallpapers with the Steam Wallpaper Engine, but it's still underused. Is there anything beneficial I can do with all this extra RAM? Also, I think running machine learning models might not help much since my GPU has limited VRAM and I'm not working on an ARM-like device.

If you’re into gaming, experiences like building in Cities Skylines or Garry's Mod would easily use up a lot of RAM. With 96GB, you'll be able to push limits without worrying about crashes. Just think of all the mods you could finally install in Minecraft too!

Time to go full-on YouTuber mode! I can't wait to test all those mods.

That would be epic! You’re set for awesome gaming sessions!

I sometimes run multiple virtual machines and different browser instances while managing accounts. I’ve hit the 64GB limit before, and it gets cramped. If you’re working with VMs or heavy multitasking, the extra RAM really helps, especially with video editing and more demanding tasks.

Haha, I had to set up a tunnel to avoid using a VM too! I get it, that can be a hassle. Video editing sounds like a fun way to utilize that RAM!

Video editing is a great shout! I’ve started doing more of that lately too.

You could always sell it! RAM prices are pretty high right now. You could pocket some cash and stick with 32GB or 64GB, which is more than enough for everyday tasks. I mean, unless you're running tons of tabs or heavy applications daily, there's really no need for that much RAM.

I tried selling mine too, but no luck! Guess advertising isn’t for me…

I actually use 96GB for specific games like DCS and MSFS, especially in VR. I’ve seen my RAM usage peak around 60GB when I'm deep into those simulations. If you're into flight or space sims, that extra RAM can be a game changer. Plus, if you edit videos, it definitely helps there too.

That sounds awesome! I'll definitely look into those games — hopefully, they won’t break the bank!

Yeah, simulations often use a lot more RAM, especially if you're running them in VR.

Honestly, 96GB is a bit excessive for typical gaming or casual use. Most people don’t really hit over 32GB in their daily tasks. Unless you’re pushing really demanding applications, it sounds like you’re reaching for ways to use the extra RAM without a real need for it.
