Is a 1200W Power Supply Excessive for My Current PC Setup?

I'm considering upgrading my power supply and have my eyes on either the NZXT 1200W 3.1 White for $200 or the Corsair RMx 1200 Shift 3.0 White for $235. However, I'm starting to wonder if that's too much power for my current build, especially since I don't plan to upgrade my components for at least the next five years. My current setup includes a Ryzen 7 8700F CPU with a Thermalright peerless assassin 120 cooler, a 9070 XT Mercury Magnetic White GPU, a B650M Plus Wi-Fi motherboard, and 16GB (2x8GB) of DDR5 RAM at 6000MHz, along with various storage options. Right now, I'm using a 750W Core Reactor PSU. Any advice would be appreciated!

Definitely overkill! But if you're considering future upgrades to a top-tier CPU or GPU, it might be worth it for the peace of mind.

An 850W should be perfectly fine! Also, the Montech Century 1050W is a solid choice at around $110. You might want to consider investing the difference in a better SSD or CPU instead.

Unfortunately, it's around $160 here, so the price difference is minor. But I'm glad to know there's good options out there!

Short answer: no, 1200W is too much for now. The long version is that it’s always better to have a little extra capacity for future-proofing, especially since GPUs are getting more power-hungry.

Yeah, a 1200W PSU is kinda overkill for your setup. If you're not planning on getting a high-end GPU soon, I'd suggest going for something in the 850-1000W range instead. It'll still give you plenty of headroom without being excessive.

That's a good point! I just wanted to make sure my GPU is getting enough power. With 750W, I'm worried it might not be enough.

Honestly, unless you're going for some super high-end combo like a 90 series GPU, a good 850W PSU should do the trick. Plus, you'll save some cash for other upgrades like a new storage drive.

I'm looking into getting a 2TB M.2 drive soon, so saving money on the PSU is appealing!
