I'm thinking about upgrading from my current 1080p 60Hz monitor to a 144Hz model. I mainly play casual games and don't dive into anything super demanding like Overwatch or Fortnite. I also want to keep my 60Hz monitor as a secondary display. Will that affect my performance, and if so, how significantly?

I found this video that explains how a second monitor can impact performance. For basic tasks like watching YouTube or chatting, the impact is usually minimal. Going for a 144Hz display is fine, but with an older GPU, you shouldn't expect to always hit those higher frame rates. You might get some games above 60 FPS, but don’t rely on hitting 144 FPS just because of the monitor.
The RX 580 is indeed an older card from 2017, but it can support dual monitors. Just keep in mind, if you are gaming on both, it might push the limits a bit. For casual gaming and non-demanding titles, you might manage a decent experience with a 144Hz screen, but don't expect it to perform miracles.
I'm planning to use it for about 5-6 months and then upgrade again. Any budget-friendly GPU recommendations?
Honestly, I'd suggest something like the GTX 1660 Super or maybe a lower-end RTX card if the prices have come down a bit.
Honestly, if you can swing it, consider getting a new GPU or even a new system. I know the prices are crazy right now, but with the RX 580, you're not going to get the full benefit of a 144Hz refresh rate. A more modern card would really elevate your gaming experience.
Any suggestions for budget options that pair well with my Ryzen 5 5500?
You probably won't see a decrease in performance. However, don't expect to consistently hit 144 FPS in most games with your RX 580. This card is a bit older, but it should still handle a 144Hz monitor without major issues.

Thanks for the video tip! It really helped clear things up.
