Is a GPU Necessary for My PC Build?

I'm new to building PCs and I'm looking for some straightforward advice. I've always used an old laptop for gaming, but now I'm considering building a desktop or purchasing a pre-built one, all while staying under a $600 budget. My main games are Minecraft and Valorant, and maybe The Sims 4 if I can manage it. My question is whether I really need a dedicated GPU or if I can get by with integrated graphics. A friend told me I absolutely need a GPU and suggested downgrading my CPU to fit one into my budget, which I'm hesitant about. Some sources say I can play the games I mentioned without a GPU, but I'm getting mixed opinions. Can someone clarify this for me? Thanks!

You'll definitely want a GPU if you plan to play Valorant and Minecraft. While integrated graphics can handle lighter games, they won’t provide a great experience for anything demanding. For serious gaming, having a dedicated GPU is key for performance.

So, if I skipped the GPU, how poorly would those games run?
