Is Coding Right for Me?

I've been studying web development for a few years now, but I often find myself feeling bored and distracted while debugging. My mind wanders, and I easily end up playing games or watching YouTube instead of focusing on my work. I'm wondering if this is a common experience for beginners or if those with prior IT backgrounds also struggle with coding. Any advice from those who have been in my shoes?

One approach I found helpful is playing a quick game of chess when I start to lose focus. It keeps my brain active and allows me to rest for a moment without completely zoning out. Just be careful—it can be addictive!

Thanks for the tip! I’m not great at chess, but I enjoy it, so I’ll give this a go.

Honestly, I’ve found that coding for work can be more enjoyable than doing it on my own. When there's a paycheck involved, the motivation and enjoyment often increase significantly.

If coding feels dull, maybe web development isn’t your calling. Try diving into other areas like game development or systems programming. Working on an open-source project that you’re interested in can really make programming more engaging. If you still don’t enjoy it after that, it’s okay to reconsider your path!

Learning to focus is essential, especially since many jobs require deep thinking. It's a skill that can take time to develop, and even after ten years, I’m still working on it. It's definitely worth the effort, so don't get discouraged!

With our attention spans getting messed up by social media, it’s important to create a distraction-free environment. Try putting your phone in another room or studying somewhere quiet, like a library. You could also use a separate device without any 'fun' apps—no YouTube or games—to help you concentrate better.

I did delete TikTok, and it was a game changer for my productivity! I replaced it with chess and Fortnite, but I set specific times for both to keep them from being too distracting.
