A few months ago, I asked an AI which tech career might suit me best, and it suggested DevOps after giving me a quiz. I'm intrigued but one of my biggest concerns is whether this career is a good fit in reality—what do experienced DevOps professionals think? I'm currently enrolled in an IT course; should I stick with it or switch my focus to DevOps training? I come from a customer service background and really want to avoid getting trapped in that field.

DevOps is more of a specialization rather than a beginner-level job. Since you're asking about it, it sounds like it would make sense to complete your IT course first. DevOps really requires a solid understanding of both development and operations, which you won't get right out of school.

From my own experience, it took me about 3-4 years of work in related fields before I could break into DevOps. It’s a culmination of skills rather than a starting point. If you have a real interest, finishing your IT course is a good move, but focus on developing your skills first!

You should expect that DevOps roles typically require some experience in IT or development. It's not an entry-level position, and companies often look for individuals with 4-5 years in infrastructure or development roles before considering a move to DevOps.

Honestly, taking advice from an AI might be a bit like asking a fortune cookie for life advice! I'd recommend sticking with your IT course since you've already invested in it. Once you have that foundation, you can explore DevOps after learning the basics of infrastructure.
