Is DirectX 12 Ultimate Worth the Extra Cash for My GPU Upgrade?

I'm planning to upgrade my GPU and I've narrowed it down to two models on Newegg that are almost identical. The only difference is that one is $60 more expensive and has 'LHR' in the model name, which I found out relates to limitations for crypto mining and isn't a concern for me since I'm just gaming. The pricier model supports DirectX 12 Ultimate, while the other only supports DirectX 12. I'm confused about whether DirectX 12 Ultimate really offers significant benefits compared to Regular DirectX 12, and if it's worth spending the extra $60. By the way, I'm looking specifically at the MSI Ventus GeForce RTX 3080 10GB. Thanks for any advice!

Yeah, the LHR tag just means it's limited for crypto mining, but for gaming, you’re fine with either card. DirectX 12 Ultimate is a nice advantage, especially for newer titles, but if you're on a budget, the standard DirectX 12 should serve you well for now. Also, keep in mind you'll probably see newer GPUs released soon and the prices may fluctuate!

Thanks for the heads up! I'll keep an eye out for new releases, but I really just want to get back into gaming soon!

You should definitely consider which components you're using. If both GPUs are the same model, then they likely support the same features across the board. But since you mentioned DirectX 12 Ultimate, all RTX 30 series GPUs—including the 3080—support it. This means you'll have access to features like ray tracing and variable rate shading with either card, so the extra $60 may not be necessary for gaming alone.

That makes sense! A lot of the benefits from DirectX 12 Ultimate might not be visible in all games yet. It really depends on what games you plan to play.
