Is Dual Booting Linux with Windows Safe on Separate Drives?

Hi there! I'm thinking about transitioning to Linux and I've added a second hard drive to my computer. I'd love to dual boot CachyOS from this second drive. I've heard that Windows updates can cause issues with dual boot setups, but is that mainly a problem when both operating systems are on the same drive? I'm planning to keep Windows for a bit until I fully adapt to Linux. Most of the software and games I use are available on Linux, except for Microsoft Teams, which I intend to use through the web instead. Just so you know, I have a recent build from May 2025 with a Ryzen 7 7800x3d, 32GB DDR5 6000, and a Radeon 9070XT.

There are some third-party Electron wrappers available for Microsoft Teams that you might find useful! Just a heads up, since they're not officially supported, you'll want to do a little research before using them.

Thank you! I will do some research on what an Electron wrapper is and give it a try once I get Linux installed. Appreciate it!

With UEFI systems, the interference from Windows is minimal compared to the old legacy boot days. Dual booting on separate disks is definitely the way to go, if it's possible for you!

Thanks! That's my plan!

You shouldn't run into issues with Windows messing up your Linux installation since your bootloader will be on a separate drive. Windows doesn't really look for bootloaders outside of its own drive, so you'll be fine!

Thank you! I'll be installing it sometime this week. Fingers crossed that it all goes smoothly!
