Is Freelancing While Employed a Good Idea for Developers?

Hey everyone! I recently took a break from my job as a developer and started doing some freelance work on the side. It's not too much, just a few paying clients here and there. Now, I'm thinking about going back to a full-time developer role and want to know more about the etiquette around continuing freelance work while employed. Is this something developers commonly do? Could it lead to a conflict of interest? How upfront should I be with potential employers about my freelance work? Thanks for your help!

I’ve been freelancing throughout my career, and it’s a great way to diversify your skills beyond the usual 9 to 5 routine. Just always check your employment contract before starting a new job. If there’s anything ambiguous, it’s worth discussing with them. Some companies are totally fine as long as you’re not coming in exhausted or poaching clients from them.

Check if your potential employer has a no-moonlighting policy. It’s crucial to clarify this upfront to avoid any issues later.

I’m also working full-time and looking to start freelancing. How did you find your freelance gigs? I’d love to hear about your experience!

Honestly, your employer doesn’t need to know what you do in your free time unless it somehow impacts their business. Just be mindful of any rules in your employment contract that might restrict you from freelancing. Most places don’t really care, as long as it doesn’t affect your day job or involve taking clients from them.

That’s true! But make sure to read your job's contract thoroughly. Some companies are stricter and won’t allow any side gigs. If you’re unsure, definitely ask before accepting the job.
