Is Getting a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems Worth It?

I'm 27 and I'm stuck between finishing my Bachelor's in Information Systems, which I have about 1.5 years left to complete, and switching to trade school to become an electrician. I took a two-year break from my studies and really need to decide. I've heard the job market for IT is really tough, with a lot of competition and outsourcing issues. By the time I finish my degree, I'd be around $14K in debt, while as an electrician, I could potentially be earning decent money much sooner. For those of you in IT, do you think pursuing this degree is still worth it? Any regrets on your end? Thanks for any insights!

Honestly, the degree is just a ticket for entry in many places. Without it, you might struggle to even get your foot in the door for certain positions, especially in larger companies. But don’t ignore the value of experience; if you've got that along with your education, you could be golden.

That's a valid point. I'm leaning toward trade work myself since it's in demand and offers stability. IT is becoming more and more saturated.

I’ve been in IT for over 15 years and never finished my degree. I always thought it held me back, but I landed solid positions thanks to experience and skills. That said, I think it really depends on your career goals. If you want to move into higher management someday, the degree might be necessary. Otherwise, building your skills and network could work just as well.

That’s a bold way to go about it! But it does depend heavily on connections and skill. I’m planning to finish my degree just to help myself stand out.

I think a bachelor's degree in IT can be worth it, especially if you're eyeing management roles at bigger companies. It gives you an edge over those without a degree, and it signals that you've stuck it out for the long haul. However, don’t underestimate the power of hands-on experience; it can sometimes outweigh the degree in the tech world.

That's true! Having the degree is one thing, but a solid portfolio of projects or experience can really make you shine. Just shows you can apply what you learned.

Yes, definitely worth it for job opportunities! Many companies filter out candidates without a degree, no matter how much experience they have. If you really want to get into IT, I’d suggest finishing up your degree while exploring entry-level positions in the field to gain that experience. It pays off in the long run!

That’s solid advice! Balancing education and experience seems to be the best approach these days.

Having an Information Systems degree has opened more doors for me than I anticipated. Initially, it helped me get interviews, and now my experience is what really counts. If you plan to grow in your career or aim for higher-level positions, it’s definitely a plus. But remember, staying current with tech trends is key, as things change fast in IT.

Exactly! Degrees matter in a lot of white-collar environments. For me, it was worth finishing because it set me up for better roles down the line.
