Is it a good idea for my small business to create our own PIM instead of using Plytix or Inriver?

I'm running a small company that currently uses a PIM system to manage our product updates, which are then reflected in our WooCommerce store. I'm considering building our own PIM system to reduce costs and better fit our specific needs. Besides just wanting to save Excel/CSV data in our SQL database, I plan to use WooCommerce's API to create new products from this database. Since I'm the only developer on our team, I believe integrating it with WooCommerce's API wouldn't be too hard, but deploying a cloud database might present some challenges. What do you think?

I initially thought PIM meant 'privileged identity management' at first, which was super confusing for a moment! 😂

That’s exactly what I’m doing right now! I’m developing a custom PIM for a small company that integrates with WooCommerce as a WordPress plugin. I’ve set up custom tables in our database for product info and I’m utilizing the WooCommerce REST API for publishing. It’s been pretty straightforward!

Awesome to hear! How's the performance been with that setup?

Have you considered using Pimcore? It’s quite open and developer-friendly, with a supportive community and significantly cheaper licensing compared to Plytix or Inriver. A PIM is essentially a powerful database, which is especially useful if you have a large number of products or need to syndicate to various channels.

Yeah, we currently have around 10,000 products and we’re shelling out 1300 USD monthly for Plytix.
