I'm building a website similar to a futaba channel and I'm trying to decide whether I should host it on my own computer or go with an online hosting provider. What are the pros and cons of each option?

Remember that a static IP can cost just as much as hosting! But dynamic DNS setups are pretty easy if you want to try home-hosting.

There's a simple script from PorkBun you can set on a cron job to manage it.

Just so you know, an online host is still just a computer running 24/7. If you decide to home-host, you'll need a strong internet connection, a good network setup, and be ready to pay a higher power bill. Most people find that the low monthly cost of a provider is worth it.

Got it, thanks!

Honestly, my localhost (127.0.0.1) has never let me down! If you have a spare PC and don't expect much traffic, self-hosting can be a fun experiment.

I'd recommend using a hosting provider. They have backup internet, power, and dedicated staff to keep everything running smoothly. Unless you have a really specific need for home-hosting, it's probably not worth the hassle.

Exactly! And you’d need some special network equipment to handle everything securely. Home networks can be vulnerable to bots.

You can try it, but you'll likely realize it's a lot of work. Most people don’t understand the full extent of the complexities until they dive in.

What do you mean by that?
