Is it better to use two 5070 Ti GPUs instead of one 5090 for a gaming or productivity setup?

I'm considering whether I should go for two cheaper 5070 Ti GPUs or just invest in a single 5090. I've never used dual GPUs before, so I'm curious about how they function together. Do both GPUs actually increase performance in gaming, or is it mainly about handling different tasks separately? Also, for things like AI workflows or productivity applications, would using two non-flagship GPUs be more efficient? From some of the replies I've received, it seems like dual GPUs might only be beneficial if they're used for different processes. Can anyone clarify this?

In gaming, no modern titles truly benefit from having two GPUs. You're better off with a single robust GPU. That said, dual GPUs can work in some productivity roles, especially if your software is designed to utilize them properly. But don't expect to see a performance boost in most gaming contexts.

Using two GPUs can be great if you're into AI or productivity. For example, I run a setup with dual 9070XTs and find it cost-effective for my AI projects. However, this setup requires specific support from your applications. Most gaming scenarios won’t show any real benefit from adding a second GPU.

You could use one GPU for gaming and the other for rendering, which some setups allow. It's also useful for tasks like virtual machines or certain AI workloads, but make sure your applications can support multiple GPUs effectively.

Generally, dual GPUs don't combine their power effectively for most tasks. SLI support has faded, and now many games just utilize the primary GPU. If you're a gamer, you'll likely find that a single high-end GPU, like the 5090, performs much better than two mid-range ones in most scenarios.
