Troubleshooting PC That Randomly Won’t Boot

I've been facing a frustrating issue with my PC where it doesn't consistently POST. After extensive troubleshooting, I'm running out of ideas and could really use your input before I consider replacing the motherboard. Here are my specs:

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D (no integrated GPU)
- Motherboard: ASRock B450M Steel Legend
- GPU: ASRock Phantom Gaming RX 570
- PSU: NZXT 650W 80+ Gold
- RAM: 2x 8GB DDR4

The main symptoms I'm experiencing are:
1. When I try to boot, the fans spin briefly, and then everything shuts off. There's no video output and no power to peripherals.
2. The fans might stay on, but still no video or power to peripherals.
3. Sometimes the PC boots normally but shuts down after roughly 30 minutes (though this hasn't happened lately).

Symptoms 1 and 2 happen most frequently, while the PC does occasionally boot just fine. I've already tested a different PSU, tried each RAM stick individually in different slots, reseated the GPU, ran it outside the case, checked all standoffs, and confirmed there's no visible damage on the motherboard. I've also ensured the BIOS is up to date and that the CPU is seated correctly.

Now I suspect the motherboard might be failing internally, possibly due to degraded VRMs or capacitors. What do you think? Does this sound like a dying motherboard to you? Is there anything else I should test before taking that step? If I do replace it, is going with a B550 chipset a good choice for compatibility with the 5700X3D, and do you have any specific board suggestions?

It sounds like you're dealing with a RAM or RAM slot issue. I suggest testing with just one RAM stick at a time. If you still have the same problem, try the second RAM stick in both slots. You'll narrow down whether it’s the RAM or potentially something with the motherboard itself. There's a slight chance it could be related to the PSU as well, but it seems unlikely based on your initial tests.

That makes sense! I did swap RAM sticks around yesterday when it last booted correctly. Maybe I've accidentally damaged the slots while doing that.

Yeah, it’s possible. But I lean toward it not being overheating since symptom 1 happens way too fast. I'll just have to try your suggestion and see how that goes.

I've had similar issues where my PC would shut down unexpectedly. In my case, it turned out to be the RAM slots themselves that had gone bad. I had to replace the motherboard. But don't overlook your CPU cooler; it could be a loose heatsink. If it's not making proper contact, that might explain the overheating and shutdowns if it’s getting too hot. It's a bit of a long shot, but worth checking!

That's interesting! I didn't think of the heatsink; I'll definitely take a look at that too. But the odd part is that it only boots sometimes. That’s what’s challenging about this issue.

Good point about the heatsink! I just replaced the thermal paste, so it's pretty fresh. But the problem does seem too quick for overheating. Still, I’ll check for any loose connections.
