Is it feasible to pursue an online math degree while self-studying computer science?

I'm working part-time as a sysadmin and thinking about taking some time off to focus on my studies. I'm considering enrolling in an online math degree program while also diving deeper into computer science on my own. Has anyone tried something similar? Would it be challenging to balance the workload? I'm looking for advice or experiences from anyone who has done this.

Honestly, I'd suggest skipping the math degree, especially an online one. Just focus on a BS in CS for now, and if you're still interested, you can always study math on the side later!

That’s interesting advice! What’s your reasoning?

Why not aim for a CS degree and just minor in math, or do it the other way around? It could balance your focus better.

Only you can really assess your ability to manage this! Consider how many hours you work, how intensive your classes will be, and if you're disciplined enough to stay organized. Think about your other commitments too, it can get pretty hectic.

Computer science is pretty much specialized math, so they complement each other well. If you have the time for self-study, just be cautious about the program's quality you're picking for math.

It's actually pretty common to double major in CS and Math. You should be able to handle self-teaching CS while doing your degree. There's a lot of overlap, especially in theory and machine learning!

That makes sense! I'm doing something similar and really feel the connections between the two subjects.

They really support each other! I did a double major while working full-time, and it was a lot of work. But it opens doors into AI and machine learning, which require strong math skills in addition to CS knowledge. It can definitely pay off in the long run!
