Is It Me or Is My Workplace Environment a Mess?

Hey everyone! So I've been working as a junior system administrator at a rehabilitation center for nearly two years now, and I'm starting to feel like things at work just aren't right. Even though I'm not highly educated, I'm pretty tech-savvy and know my way around Linux, networking, and a few other IT areas. However, lately, I'm feeling more frustrated than ever. It seems like nearly all my suggestions to improve our work structure get ignored, which is disheartening.

For example, I set up a documentation system that only I use and proposed several inventory solutions that also went nowhere. Moreover, our main network gateway is outdated and has inconsistencies that we still can't explain. We're handling support requests through personal calls and WhatsApp, making it impossible to manage our day effectively.

I really care about improving our workplace, but I'm starting to wonder if the issues are more about the environment I'm in rather than my competence. Am I wrong to feel this way? If I'm right, what should I do?

What you're experiencing isn’t uncommon in disorganized workplaces. It might be time to seek a new job that actually values your skills. You deserve a place that recognizes your contributions and uses your talents!

I appreciate the encouragement! I’m open to finding a better fit.

You're not in the wrong here. A lot of management seems to deploy solutions for the sake of doing so. A solid manager would have helped you prioritize basic infrastructure before enabling you to make changes. Use this experience to enhance your resume and look for organizations that actually mentor their staff.

Thanks! I guess I do have some valuable experience now, but it can be frustrating not having a clear direction.

If no one there wants to improve the systems, you might want to start looking for a new job. It’s generally good to switch jobs every couple of years to keep your salary competitive anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’m definitely considering it as one option.

It sounds like you’re dealing with quite a bit of common workplace frustration. From what you described, there seems to be a lack of structure and commitment to improvement in your IT department. It definitely wouldn’t hold up under scrutiny! If I were in your shoes, I’d push for some kind of ticketing system to track issues and start building some processes. But it sounds like you may be in a tough spot with a team that doesn't prioritize these changes. Keep learning, even if it's frustrating right now!

Glad you agree! It’s tough when the environment doesn’t support growth. Maybe you can advocate for changes slowly, and if that doesn't work, look for a more supportive workplace.

It seems like you’re too invested in your workplace’s issues. You might want to accept that not everyone will care as much as you do and focus on what you can control. Maybe work on your own projects and keep a low profile until you find a better fit.

Yeah, I hear you. I just want to keep growing and learning. But I’d prefer not to remain stagnant.
