Is it normal for my laptop battery to degrade this much after 3.5 years?

I've noticed that my Dell laptop's battery drains really quickly, lasting only about 45 minutes when using Firefox, which is a far cry from the 5 hours it used to give. I checked the battery report and found that the design capacity is 40,185 mWh, but the current full charge capacity is only 9,428 mWh. After 3.5 years of use, is this level of battery degradation normal? I'm considering a replacement now.

It sounds like it's definitely time to replace that battery since you're down to about 25% of its original capacity. Generally, you shouldn't see such a big drop in performance after just over three years. It really depends on how the laptop was used—keeping it plugged in all the time can harm the battery's health. For instance, my Dell Latitude is quite old but still runs well because I only charge it when it needs it.

Same here! My mom kept her laptop plugged in often and she had to replace hers in just 6 months! We had a talk about battery care after that.
