Is it possible to update my iPad to a specific older version of iOS?

I'm currently using an iPad that has iOS 16.2 installed, and I need to update it to at least iOS 16.4 to access more recent apps. However, I'm reluctant to upgrade to the latest version because I'm worried it will slow down my device, affect battery life, and include some visual changes that really bother me. Is there a way to specifically update to an older version instead? I've noticed that all earlier IPSWs are unsigned. Just to clarify, I've been stuck without updates for three years, so any changes to lag, storage, or battery life will definitely feel impactful. If it's not possible, I'd prefer an honest answer.

Does your iPad even support iOS 26? It might only go up to versions like 16, 17, or 18.

Honestly, you should just update to the latest version. It's important for security fixes, and eventually, you’ll run into the same issue with apps not updating or downloading.

But that update is just going to destroy my iPad! Seriously, my friend had to change her iPhone's display to black and white because of the visuals after the update.

Have you tried holding the shift key while clicking the upgrade button in iTunes? That used to allow you to choose any IPSW version to upgrade, but I’m not sure if it's still a thing.

Unfortunately, you can't really control mobile updates like that. Both iOS and Android tend to push the latest version and don’t typically let you choose specific incremental updates.

You’re really missing out by not updating for security reasons. Apple doesn’t let people go back on purpose for a reason. If you do want to try, you’ll need to find a signed ISPW, connect your iPad in recovery mode, and select the version you downloaded. Just make sure to back everything up first!

Plus, if you don’t like the new features, you can disable things like the 'liquid glass' effect!
