I'm curious if anyone has tried to turn an original Nokia 3310, which only supports 2G, into a phone that can handle 4G or 5G networks. I don't want any additional apps or fancy features—just the basic functionality of calling and texting like in the old days. Is this even feasible? What should I be aware of? Any insights would be appreciated!

Unfortunately, upgrading a Nokia 3310 to support 4G or 5G just isn't doable. It's an ancient phone, and those newer networks primarily enhance data usage, which the 3310 isn't designed for at all. Plus, most countries are phasing out 2G, so you'll be limited soon anyway.
You'd really need to redesign the circuit board to integrate new wireless networking hardware. Unless you're up for a big project like that, it's best left as is.
To make a Nokia 3310 work with 4G or 5G, you'll need to replace the entire network IC stage. There aren't any simple drop-in replacements, so it would require significant modifications to the hardware.
I get that, but I'm considering designing a new part via PCB Way to replace the old 2G components. Is that crazy?

So there's a chance, but a complicated one? I might look into PCB Way for help then!
