Is It Realistic for a Beginner to Build a Marketplace Website Using AI?

Hey everyone, I've got a new project in mind that involves creating a website. I want to try building it myself instead of hiring someone, as I've previously worked with WordPress but found it lacking—especially for mobile use. I'm planning to set up a marketplace where sellers can upload their listings, which sounds like it will involve some tricky backend work. How feasible is it for someone like me, a beginner, to handle this? Also, I'm curious about incorporating AI in the process, especially since I have access to Cursor Pro for a year. If you think I should just hire a professional instead, I'm open to that too!

If your marketplace doesn’t require user authentication or online payments, then using AI might be feasible—it would be more like a static site. But be careful; many non-developers struggle with managing an AI-built website. There’s a lot more involved than just building; consider hosting, databases, security, and maintenance too. If you want to seriously learn, stay away from AI initially. If deployment is your priority, website builders like Squarespace or Webflow might be the way to go.

It really depends on your goals. If you want to genuinely learn how to build the site, go for it on your own. If you’re okay with thinking you’ve learned something but just want to show off a product, using AI is a good shortcut. But remember, AI is just a tool; it can’t replace foundational learning.

As someone who runs a software agency, I’d say using AI for simpler projects like landing pages can definitely work, especially if you’re not too tech-savvy. However, for something more complex like a marketplace with transactions and secure logins, it might be better to lean on an expert. While AI is useful, it’s not yet foolproof enough for building secure, fully functional platforms—that's why professional developers are still in demand.

If you're generating code with AI without understanding it, you might end up with insecure and unreliable results. It’s better to learn the basics first before diving into complex projects. Building a marketplace isn't beginner territory, and while creating something functional is definitely possible, crafting a secure product is quite a challenge.

Just jump in and try it out! With AI, you can say you’re starting from scratch, and it should guide you through the essential components of building your site. Don’t forget to check how the AI can assist you in learning as you build.
