Is it realistic to switch from accounting to a tech career?

I'm currently working as an accountant, mostly doing clerical tasks, and I've come to the conclusion that this isn't the right career for me. I'm thinking about making a transition into the tech sector by learning to program. While I have some coding experience from high school, it has been a while since I've dabbled in it. Given the current job market, is it realistic to make this career change? What would be the best way to start this journey?

Changing careers to programming is definitely doable, but keep in mind it's more of a marathon than a sprint. Start treating your learning like a second job—dedicate consistent hours each week, even if it’s just 1-2 hours a day. Instead of waiting until you feel fully prepared, start with small projects that could solve real problems for yourself or someone you know. For example, I know someone who works in IT and spends his free time on small coding projects while taking courses. Also, consider any overlaps in your current job where you could apply programming, like automation or data analysis. That could be a great bridge into the tech world!

That makes sense! I was thinking of learning programming alongside my accounting tasks to automate some processes. Do you think it's still feasible to transition gradually, especially with the rise of AI?
