I've come across some discussions about disabling the integrated graphics on AM5 processors to reduce idle power consumption and lower temperatures. I'm using a 7800X3D combined with a 4070S and I'm considering trying this out for some extra cooling benefits. However, I worry about complications if I encounter issues down the line.
I'm interested in feedback from those who have disabled their iGPU:
- How much did your idle power and temperature drop before and after making the change?
- Did you experience any downsides in everyday usage? For instance, does turning off the iGPU affect AMD's video encoding/decoding capabilities if the dedicated GPU can manage this?
- What specific BIOS settings did you use for various vendors? Are options labelled like 'Integrated Graphics Controller,' 'Primary Display (PEG/iGPU),' or 'UMA Frame Buffer Size = Auto/Disabled'? It would be great to hear the exact toggles you used from Asus, MSI, or Gigabyte.
- Have you faced any unusual problems like black screens during sleep/wake, remote access issues, or quirks with Linux Wayland?
While I'd prefer to keep the iGPU as a safety net, I'm open to trying it out if it genuinely helps with power savings of 5-10W and lowers temps by a few degrees. Looking forward to hearing real experiences and any potential warnings!

If your main GPU fails, you can clear the CMOS or hit a BIOS reset switch to re-enable the iGPU. I made a note in my PC case just in case things go sideways. Test it out and see if there's a difference; if not, just re-enable it.
I disabled it and my idle temps remained the same—no noticeable difference from my AMD 9600X3.
It really shouldn't be risky. If you ever find yourself needing it, just re-enable it. Or, if your GPU fails, just reset the BIOS and the iGPU activates again.
If you're not using the iGPU for anything like a second monitor, go ahead and disable it. You’ll also free up a bit of system RAM that the iGPU reserves!
I disabled my iGPU on a 9800X3D and saw no temp change, but also had no issues afterward. Did it straight from the BIOS!
You can just turn it back on in the BIOS if you run into any problems, right? Seems pretty safe to try.
Yeah but good luck if your GPU fails and you're left with no display!
Exactly! It’s easy to switch back if needed.
I’ve seen some reports that say the 7800X3D doesn’t change in temperature whether the iGPU is enabled or disabled. Zero impact on my end, honestly.
Sounds about right—could be all for nothing.

Same here, didn’t notice any difference either!
