I'm in the process of upgrading my PC and I'm keen on switching from my current Intel i7-4790k to a new Ryzen 7 7700x. I've had a decent experience with my RX 6700 XT and Thermaltake TR2 S 700W power supply, but I've been warned that upgrading my CPU without swapping out the power supply for a higher quality one might be risky. My dad is unsure if we can afford a new PSU right now since we've already spent quite a bit on the new parts. I'm wondering, if I upgrade my CPU now, will my old PSU just fail or damage my new components during gaming?

Upgrading your CPU isn't going to cause an immediate explosion, but the PSU you have is pretty old and not the most reliable. The risk of it failing and damaging your new components increases with the value of those parts. If you're planning to upgrade, it might be wise to do it now, but keep in mind that using the current PSU could potentially fry your new CPU if it fails unexpectedly. Just try to replace it with a reliable one sooner rather than later!

Thanks for the insight! I've been trying to figure out a budget for a good PSU, preferably something gold-rated from a respected brand like Corsair. Just hoping to find something decent that's under $100.
