Why do my RAM sticks not work properly after moving them between setups?

I have a somewhat unconventional setup where I move my RAM sticks between my home computer and my college PC weekly. When I plug them into my college setup, everything works smoothly. However, every weekend when I return home and plug them into my home system, which has 32GB of RAM (with 16GB hardware reserved), I run into issues. The XMP profile doesn't activate, and I often find myself spending a couple of hours unplugging and re-plugging them in different configurations—using one stick or two since my motherboard only has two slots. At some point, they eventually work, but it's frustrating. I'm stuck with this arrangement until I can afford to buy a second pair of RAM sticks. My motherboard is an A320M-DGS rev 1.04, paired with a Ryzen 5 2600x, and I've considered a BIOS update. However, Asrock advises against upgrading the BIOS for this specific CPU.

You really should consider how much time you’re spending on this. If it takes you about 2 hours each time to get things working, is it really worth it? Maybe think about just getting another set of RAM. Of course, that depends on how valuable your time is to you, but it could save you a lot of headaches in the long run. Just a thought!

I get that, but it's just a temporary situation until I save up for another pair. Shouldn't be too long now.

Keep in mind that RAM connectors are typically rated for only about 25 insertions. So if you're constantly re-plugging them, you might run into issues with reliability down the line.

How long have you been doing this swap? Just so you know, RAM slots aren’t designed for constant plugging and unplugging. They can wear out faster than you think, as they have a limited number of connection cycles.

I’ve only done this a few times. Once I get the funds, I’ll have a permanent setup and this won't be an issue anymore.
