Is it safe to use open Wi-Fi at a hotel without a VPN?

Hey everyone! I'm currently at a hotel that offers open Wi-Fi, and I'm using it for social media and checking my emails. A friend mentioned that I could be at risk of being hacked since I don't have a VPN. Is this something I should be worried about? Just to note, I'm using an updated iPhone. Thanks for your insights!

You really shouldn’t worry too much. With open Wi-Fi, while it's true that your data could potentially be intercepted, most traffic nowadays is encrypted. Just steer clear of any sensitive transactions, like banking, unless you're using a VPN.

What do you mean by 'intercepted'? Can someone really see what I'm doing?
