Is It Smart to Stagger Buying PC Parts Over Several Years?

Hey everyone! I'm in a bit of a dilemma regarding building my own PC over time. With RAM prices being all over the place, I'm wondering if it's wise to stagger my purchases over, say, five years as I save up. My worry is whether parts might become obsolete or incompatible if I buy them at different times, especially since I've never owned a desktop before and I'm more of a software person than hardware savvy. I have some particular hardware in mind like 64GB of RAM, multiple SSDs, and a decent GPU for gaming and music production, but I'm not sure about the best strategy for buying. What do you all think about this approach? What should I buy first, and do you think buying used parts is a viable option now and in the future?

Why not just start a GoFundMe for your PC? It’d be a fun way for everyone to contribute! Seriously though, buying used can be a good option if you find trusted sources. Just keep an eye on warranty and if parts are still supported.

You're definitely right to be concerned about parts becoming outdated. If you buy RAM now but don’t get your CPU for another year, you could find that what you just bought isn’t the best option anymore by the time your build is ready. It’s usually best to buy the main components together or very close together.

I think it’s better to save up and buy everything at once when you’re ready. Buying parts slowly could lead to some of them becoming outdated by the time you're ready to assemble. Plus, the compatibility might change over the years as technology advances. If you can hold off and scoop everything up at once, that’ll probably serve you better in the long run.
