Hey everyone! I'm a newbie and just bought a new laptop mainly for my studies, which involve programming, video editing, and some gaming. While browsing online during my vacation, I stumbled across The Odin Project, which is a great resource for learning web development from scratch. However, they highly recommend using Linux for programming. Now, I'm torn: should I stick with Windows for now since I'm still getting used to my new laptop, or dive straight into Linux? I've set up VirtualBox to explore Xubuntu, as suggested by The Odin Project, but I haven't started it yet. Would it be better to try out different distributions first or go ahead with dual booting? I'd love any advice or recommendations!

I'd suggest starting with something like Ubuntu or Fedora instead of Xubuntu, especially if you’re new to Linux. They’re generally more user-friendly and can help you get comfortable quicker. If Xubuntu is provided by The Odin Project, you may still want to consider other options after getting a feel for Linux. Good luck with it!
Is XFCE really that unfriendly? I thought it was just a lightweight desktop environment!
Starting with VirtualBox is a good call. It lets you explore without making permanent changes. I'd recommend Linux Mint or Ubuntu as solid beginner options. Just take your time getting used to the workflow!
Sounds good! I'll keep my options open.
Installing Linux is super simple! You can even try it out with a live USB stick first. I think trying it out in VirtualBox is a great idea before committing. Just jump in and explore!
I like the idea of the live USB, thanks!
If you're into gaming, check if your favorite games run on Linux. Some run great, but a few might not. Do your courses depend on specific software? That’s also something to consider.
I’ll definitely look into that before switching!
Honestly, if you’re just starting out and have a new laptop, sticking with Windows might be the best move for now. It’s really easy to set up and most software will run smoothly. But once you feel ready, installing Linux alongside it could work well. Have fun experimenting!
If you have to ask, maybe just wait a bit before switching!
Appreciate the input! I just want to make sure I don't mess anything up.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll keep that in mind as I explore.
