Is it time to upgrade my GPU for 4K gaming?

I'm currently using a prebuilt system with a Zotac GeForce RTX 4070 and an AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D. I mostly game at 4K on my TV, but I sometimes switch to a 1080p monitor. Lately, I've been experiencing performance issues with newer games even on very high or ultra settings, struggling to hit a stable 60fps. I plan on starting to stream later this year, but right now, it feels like my gaming experience is already marginal. I believe the GPU might be holding me back at 4K, rather than the CPU. With rumors of RAM shortages and possible GPU price hikes, I'm considering whether I should upgrade now or wait a bit before selling my current GPU. I'm looking for advice on whether it's better to upgrade now or hold off, recommendations for GPUs that would offer a solid performance boost for 4K gaming, and if I'm correct in my assessment about potential bottlenecks.

4K gaming can be brutal even for top-tier cards. It really comes down to the games you're playing and what your budget looks like. If you're covering e-sports titles, a 9070 XT could give you a much-needed boost. Before deciding, consider checking your PC's BIOS settings, as many prebuilt systems ship with suboptimal configurations.

If you're eyeing an upgrade in the next six months, it might be wise to pull the trigger now. GPU prices are unlikely to drop further. For a noticeable boost in 4K performance, you might want to consider cards like the 9070 XT or the 5070 Ti, depending on your preferences. Just keep in mind, the costs can be steep, so weigh your options carefully.

I'm not too concerned about hitting Ultra settings at 4K. Very High or even High settings with 60fps would work perfectly for me. I appreciate your input on the BIOS—I’ll take a look at those settings!

Your 4070 isn't really designed for true 4K performance. Even the 4070 Ti might struggle to maintain 60fps on Ultra settings. If you're focusing on rasterization and not interested in ray tracing, the 9070 XT is a solid choice. Additionally, the 5080 could be worthwhile for stable 60fps averages at 4K.

Thanks! But if the 9070 XT and my 4070 are similarly priced, why is the 9070 so much better?

Good point! The 9070 XT might have a stronger architecture and more VRAM, which helps in 4K gaming. You might just be paying for better performance despite the price being similar.
