I'm strapped for cash and can't afford a full PC build right now. I'm considering buying an RX 580 and connecting it to my laptop for a temporary solution. Has anyone done this? Is it a good idea?

What kind of laptop are you using? The model can make a big difference in how well an eGPU will work with your setup.
You can definitely find portable GPUs, but beware—they're often pricey for the performance they're delivering.
Nothing fancy, it's a Lenovo ThinkPad with an i5 7th gen processor and 8GB of RAM.
