I'm considering upgrading my setup with an AMD Ryzen 5 9600X and looking at motherboards. Is there a real benefit to investing in a premium motherboard over a more affordable option, apart from just having extra NVMe slots or built-in WiFi? I've heard some negative things about ASRock motherboards, so I want to make an informed decision without spending too much.

Generally speaking, the motherboard doesn't directly affect performance outside of having faster slots for GPUs or NVMe drives. So if you don’t need those features, stick to the basics!

Unless you're planning to overclock your CPU, you really don't need to splurge on a high-end motherboard. Just choose one with the features that matter most to you.

You really pay more for the extra features and build quality. Many feel apprehensive putting a pricey GPU or CPU on a budget motherboard, but honestly, for a typical setup, a basic board will do just fine unless you specifically need advanced features.

More expensive motherboards usually have better power delivery and cooling solutions, which can lead to longer lifespan and improved overclocking potential. But if you're not into overclocking, it mostly comes down to extra features like additional PCIe slots or USB ports.

If you're on a tight budget, just be aware that some lower-end boards can have VRM overheating issues. I recommend looking for an AM5 board around $140 or so, which typically offers enough features along with decent power management without additional frills.
