Is it worth it to learn touch typing for programming?

I recently graduated with a degree in Computer Science and I'm currently on the hunt for entry-level positions in software engineering or security. I've always typed with two fingers on each hand, which gets me consistent speeds of 65-70 words per minute with over 97% accuracy, but I still rely on looking at the keyboard about 30% of the time. While I've managed just fine, I sometimes feel that my typing speed lags behind my thoughts.

I have large hands, which makes positioning them on the home row quite uncomfortable, and my long arms force me to adjust my elbow posture in a way that seems awkward for touch typing. I'm curious if other programmers have similar experiences and whether I should invest my time in learning to touch type. I worry that not knowing how to touch type might be a downside in a tech career if colleagues notice. Am I overthinking this?

Absolutely, you should give it a try! It generally doesn't take long to learn touch typing—just a couple of weeks if you practice about 15 minutes a day. Plus, many typing websites make the learning process enjoyable with games and challenges! Eventually, you'll find that being able to type faster will really help with your programming efficiency, as you'll be able to keep up with your thoughts without losing your place.
