Is it worth upgrading from DDR4 64GB 3200MHz now?

I've got an i9 9900k paired with 64GB of DDR4 3200MHz RAM and a 4070 Ti. While my setup still runs really well, I've noticed the CPU is running hotter these days and it can't maintain a 5GHz overclock anymore. I'm considering whether to upgrade to a newer CPU, like the 14700k, with a DDR4 motherboard, or if I should go for 32GB of DDR5 5600MHz RAM instead. I've already got a work computer and a gaming laptop with DDR5 from a couple of years back; they definitely feel snappier than my main rig. I'm curious if the CPU's age is the main issue or if it's really the RAM speed causing the difference.

If you can comfortably spend the cash on high-quality DDR5, then go for it. But if you're on a budget, stick with DDR4 and get a Z790 motherboard. The 14700k will work perfectly with it, and you'll save a lot of money in the process.

Honestly, if you have 64GB of DDR4, there's no urgent need to jump to DDR5. I'd suggest upgrading your CPU and motherboard to an Intel socket 1700 option with a newer generation chip. You'd get a solid performance boost without overthinking it. I did the same thing and spent way too much trying to chase the next generation—just keep it simple!

Before making any purchases, consider trying a better cooler if you’re worried about heat. Your current RAM is still valid, and it's a decent option if you want to sell it later. I’d recommend checking out the Thermalright Peerless Assassin cooler to see if that helps with your CPU temperatures. Also, a fresh OS installation might give your PC a little boost.

If your setup is still running fine, it might be smarter to save up for the next GPU release—you could end up needing around $2,000 for a good upgrade.

It sounds like your cooling might be the real issue here if the CPU is running hotter than before. A new cooler could really help, and make sure your thermal paste is fresh. And about that snappiness – it might be related to your storage speed as well. If your SSD is over 70% full, it might be worth it to upgrade to a larger, faster SSD before you switch anything else. In games, if your CPU isn’t hitting 100% usage, then you might need to look at upgrading your GPU for a better experience.
