I'm currently using an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D paired with an XFX Swift 9070 XT, but I'm stuck with a basic Asus B450M Dragon motherboard. It's limiting me in several ways: there are no ARGB headers for my fans, I lack a second M.2 slot for extra storage, and the mATX size feels cramped for this large GPU. I'm considering upgrading to an MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus to address these quality-of-life issues. Is it a smart move to spend on a premium AM4 motherboard at this stage, or should I hold off?

I've got a 5700X3D with a 9070 XT on a B450 board, and the performance has been solid for me. Sure, I've worried about the PCIe 3.0 limitation, but in practical terms, it hasn’t been an issue. However, I see where you’re coming from regarding M.2 storage and overall upgrades. Given how costly moving to AM5 can be right now, it makes sense to upgrade your motherboard to better meet your needs.
If your current motherboard is really hindering your experience, then it’s definitely a valid reason to make the jump to a new one. Upgrading just for the sake of performance usually isn’t necessary, but in your case, making sure your setup meets your needs is totally justified!
Honestly, a month ago I'd have said go for AM5 and not waste cash on an outdated platform. But now with RAM prices, it might be worth it if the price is right. Just check around for used options as well; you might find something good without breaking the bank!
Good idea! I'm looking at the MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus for around $135 in my area. If I can score it used, that’s even better, but I might bite the bullet new if it's not too rough on my wallet.

I can relate! I’ve upgraded almost everything in my rig over the past couple of years, and now the motherboard feels like the weak link for me too. It's tough to figure out if I should just bite the bullet and go for it.
