Is Kubuntu Worth Switching to from Ubuntu with KDE?

If it were me, I'd definitely go for Kubuntu. I find managing duplicate apps and system settings across different desktop environments annoying. Starting with Kubuntu will give you a cleaner, less cluttered experience.

Realistically, both Kubuntu and the standard Ubuntu with KDE will get you to the same place, but you'll deal with some duplicated applications if you try to add KDE to existing Ubuntu. If you're sure about embracing KDE, starting with Kubuntu makes sense to avoid that chaos.

I had a messy experience when I tried to add KDE to an existing setup. I ended up with multiple file managers and terminal applications. If continuity and organization matter to you, opting for a clean install of Kubuntu is advisable.

Some suggest ignoring Kubuntu due to its older Plasma version. They recommend Tuxedo OS or KDE Neon instead—which are both based on Ubuntu LTS and have the latest KDE Plasma. Personally, I think Tuxedo OS is solid, but opinions vary on Neon.

Kubuntu and Ubuntu essentially use the same packages, so you'll find the same software versions available. The main difference is that Kubuntu comes preconfigured for KDE, which can save you some setup time if you're all in on KDE. If you're starting fresh, installing Kubuntu might be the smoother route because it reduces the hassle involved in configuring everything yourself.
