Is Migrating to the Cloud Really Cost Effective?

I'm curious about the cost-effectiveness of moving to cloud infrastructure as we shift towards AI. Recently, we migrated our legacy application—which supports both web and app functionality—to the cloud. We integrated features like signup with Cognito and implemented rules with Cloudflare and WAF. However, I've noticed an uptick in bot attacks, leading us to hire a cybersecurity team to manage this. No matter what rules they put in place, new types of attacks keep appearing. Interestingly, when the application was on-premises, we didn't experience this level of attacks. Sometimes, I wonder about the actual benefits of modernization. Is the application just more robust, or is it actually more vulnerable? Our company removed legacy support, claiming it was for cost-cutting, but it seems like we're incurring new expenses to support these cloud applications—such as paying for cloud infrastructure, security teams, and additional services. What's going on here?

You're highlighting a key point about cloud migration. It's more than just the visible costs; you should consider both the actual incurred costs and the potential risks you're mitigating. For instance, if moving to the cloud can prevent a major outage—which could cost you significantly—sometimes it's worth the insurance cost. Think of it this way: If you're paying $1,000 a month to avoid a 1% chance of an $80,000 loss, that might make sense financially.

I get that idea, but when we transitioned, we cut down our application team from six people to two. Now, it feels like the workload has just shifted to third parties like cloud and cyber teams. Maybe once the app stabilizes in a few months, we might see some cost savings.

I hear you, but there's also the added risk that comes with cloud setups due to their complexity. Just pointing out that our data center rarely had downtime, while major cloud providers faced significant outages last year.

We've had similar experiences moving apps to a large cloud provider; it can really stack up in costs. We switched to Gcore, and it's actually saved us money in the long run. We're still enjoying the benefits of cloud services while dealing with fewer extra costs and complexities from managing multiple teams.
