Is My IT Department Watching Me Through My Laptop Camera?

After returning from the Christmas break, I had some issues with Outlook on my work laptop, which I took home that holiday season. I contacted IT for help, and they mentioned something about a password problem. Later, I noticed that the privacy screen on my laptop's camera was left open, exposing the lens—a position I always keep covered for privacy since I'm the only one who uses the laptop. I fixed it again. Then today, I called IT about another issue with my laptop after an update caused my touchpad to stop working. IT fixed the issue, but now that I'm home for the weekend and need my laptop for schoolwork, I again found the privacy cover open while I was in bed—definitely not a position I'd want visible to anyone at work! I'm concerned that IT might somehow be monitoring me through my laptop, and I want to know how to check if they're using any apps to listen or watch me.

Don't stress it too much! IT isn’t out to get you. They might be able to see what you do on the laptop, but the camera? Nope, they can't control that from afar. Just make sure all your software is up-to-date and take precautions like covering the camera when it’s not in use.

IT can monitor your activities on the laptop in terms of websites visited and software used, but they can't control your camera remotely. If they had access to see through your camera, the slider would still operate as normal. I’d say check your privacy settings and install a camera cover if it makes you feel better!

I’d go with option B here. Your IT team isn’t sneaking around your house—they’d have to physically be there to actually manipulate a physical switch. If you’re really concerned, covering the camera with tape or a sticky note will do the trick and keep you from worrying.

And just a heads up, anytime the camera is in use, there’s usually a light that turns on. If there's no light, you’re in the clear.

Honestly, it's probably just a mechanical issue with the slider. If the screen’s moved while transporting it, there’s no way software could control it. To ease your mind, you might want to run a virus/malware scan just to be safe—you can use built-in Windows tools or trusted software.

It sounds like your privacy cover might just be loose. IT can’t remotely move a physical switch, so it’s likely you’re accidentally knocking it while moving the laptop around. Try taping it down for peace of mind! Also, nobody really cares enough to spy on you; you’re not that important.

Exactly! Unless you’re doing something super sketchy at work, IT is probably not watching you. It’s much more likely just a case of a faulty cover.
