Is My New UPS Setup Causing Problems with My Computer?

Hey everyone! I'm new to posting here and would love your help. I recently built a new computer with some pretty decent specs: an i7-12700k, 64GB DDR4 3200 RAM, a 5070Shadow3x GPU, an Asus Prime H770 Plus motherboard, and an 850W Corsair RM850e PSU. However, I've been experiencing strange power issues in my house — whenever my computer is on and the microwave runs, it causes the power to cut out in my room and kitchen. To avoid this, I bought an APC UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector, 600VA model, which I heard good things about.

After connecting my computer, three monitors, and the modem to the UPS, I noticed my power supply started buzzing and quickly turned it off. I unplugged everything and returned to a surge protector, but the buzzing didn't stop even after I restarted my PC. Thankfully, after troubleshooting by unplugging and reseating my GPU, the buzzing eventually stopped. Now I'm worried — was my GPU or PSU damaged from this? Do I need to get a different UPS, and is there a possibility there's something wrong with my home wiring? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I noticed you mentioned the APC UPS BE600M1 — that model is limited to about 330W, and with your system under load, you'd be running way over that. Make sure to look for a UPS that can comfortably exceed your PSU’s wattage, ideally like 1200VA or more. You might want to consider checking your wiring too; the power cut sounds suspicious. You never know!

Yeah, definitely a bigger UPS is essential. Also, keep in mind how many watts your monitors are pulling when you're estimating total usage.

You definitely need a more powerful UPS based on your specs! It’s also a good idea to hire an electrician to check your house’s wiring since it's cutting out when other appliances like the microwave are used. This could indicate a more significant electrical problem that needs fixing.

Thanks for that suggestion! I'd love to know which UPS models are reliable for my specific PSU since I've read some aren't compatible.

It sounds like your current UPS isn't able to handle the power requirements of your system. I recommend only plugging your PC into the UPS and keeping your monitors on a regular surge protector. For what you have, you might need something like a 1500VA model to ensure you have enough wattage. Better safe than sorry when it comes to your setup!

Absolutely! When running systems like yours, the headroom is crucial. An electrician could also be worth calling — the issues with your home wiring could be more serious.
