Is Now the Right Time to Upgrade My PC Parts?

I'm trying to figure out if I should go ahead and upgrade my PC parts now or wait. I just set up a media server using my grandma's old computer, which I built around 2019. It currently has 8 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. I've been looking into upgrading both, especially since the prices seem to be quite high recently. I found 16 GB of DDR4 RAM for about $170 CAD, which feels steep compared to what I paid for 32 GB of DDR5 for my Framework laptop in fall 2024. While I don't urgently need the RAM now, I can foresee needing more storage soon, especially since my brother wants to run a Minecraft server on it too. My concern is if I buy now and prices drop later, that would be frustrating, but if I wait and they go even higher, I might not be able to afford the upgrade at all. What's the general consensus on this?

Honestly, it feels like you picked a tough spot to dive in. Prices for RAM and SSDs are climbing, and GPU prices aren't looking much better either. But hey, if you need it, better to snag it now than wait and pay even more later!

True, I think the worst may be yet to come, so your timing could definitely work in your favor.

Not trying to be a downer, but I think the best time to buy was actually a little while back. Prices have already seen a hike and could keep rising for at least another year. Waiting might lead to more regret.

Yeah, fair point. I agree; it's probably smarter to just upgrade now and enjoy the better system while you can.

If you're feeling the need for an upgrade, just go for it. Prices aren't going to drop significantly anytime soon. If you upgrade now, you can always swap out parts later when prices are a bit better. Just make sure any new components are compatible with what you already have!

Luckily, my main system is still functioning well, so I only need a few small upgrades for now.
