I recently took on the role of IT director at a small non-profit organization, and I'm faced with the task of upgrading our outdated server setup. Currently, we operate several Avigilon cameras along with an on-premises storage system for security footage, keycard software, and a few virtual machines. Additionally, we support another non-profit with around 25 Ubiquiti cameras. I've been considering transitioning all our cameras to Ubiquiti for better cost efficiency and ease of management. A rep from our previous managed service provider reached out to help with a quote for a rackmount server, but I'm curious if a DIY tower build using PC Parts Picker would suffice for our needs instead, keeping costs in mind. I'm new to this level of decision-making in IT and want to make sure I'm taking a sustainable approach. What do you think?

I've had a great experience with Ubiquiti cameras. They're super easy to set up and the image quality is impressive, plus you won't deal with any licensing fees! If your main concern is cost and simplicity, switching to Ubiquiti is definitely the way to go. As for the server setup, it sounds like you're currently using some services that might require a robust server. Just keep in mind what exactly you need from it, especially if you're integrating multiple systems together.

It’s worth considering existing services you use for finance and access control. If you depend on specific software, like keycard management, stick with what you have unless you're absolutely sure the new system will accommodate your needs.
