Is Switching to Cloudflare Worth It for Our Site?

We're currently running our site, Cutiebuzz, on a VPS, but my coworker suggested we switch to a Cloudflare worker plus D1 setup. I'm uncertain about how this switch would affect our costs and performance. Has anyone made this change before? Is it a worthwhile decision?

It really comes down to traffic and current limitations. For low traffic, Cloudflare is great for free. Once you start reaching medium traffic, it's about even cost-wise with your VPS. However, high traffic could get pricey, especially with D1's limitations—definitely consider if your current setup is really that problematic before making the change.

So, Cloudflare can get pricey, but how much more than $30 are we talking if we start getting a lot of readers?

Asking why you want to switch is key. If it's about improving uptime during busy times, Cloudflare with its edge-distributed servers can help. If you're doing fine now, it might not be necessary. Focus on what your current setup lacks before you consider a switch.

My coworker is keen on the serverless approach and believes it would help with unexpected traffic spikes.

Cloudflare Workers with D1 can significantly improve speed and scalability without the hassle of managing your own VPS. But if your existing system is working fine, the benefits may not justify the switch. It’s essential to weigh the potential cost against the convenience.

I've noticed an uptick in site visits lately, and I'm currently paying about $10 for my VPS. Should I expect that Cloudflare would end up being more expensive?

Before making a decision, analyze your traffic patterns. A VPS remains a cost-effective solution for consistent moderate traffic, while Cloudflare becomes more beneficial if you anticipate needing to manage high bursts of global traffic.

Can Cloudflare's free tier handle 100 concurrent readers without any problems?

Answered By CuriousCoder99 On

If PocketBase is doing its job, it might not make sense to switch to a service with variable costs. Remember that with Cloudflare, while the initial tiers seem cheaper, costs can rise unexpectedly depending on usage. I'd stick with a known option unless you have a clear issue to resolve.

PocketBase works pretty well, but ongoing server maintenance can be a hassle. We have a 1GB RAM server, and we're happy with its performance. But my concern is whether the free Cloudflare setup can handle 100 simultaneous users.
